A Quick One to wrap up the year

Driving in to the office this morning to get to my j-o-b I listened to some of the sports talk on the radio.  I especially like to do this on Mondays, as the microphone-jockeys actually have a lot to review, plus this time of year it means its time to dissect Sunday’s football games (Note: if you are not a football fan, don’t fret: I won’t spend a lot of time on football here!).  Yesterday was the last day of the season for Houston’s pro team, so there was a certain “year in review” angle to the discussion.  One caller was rather irate, saying he felt that the team had not improved this year, and an 8-8 record was unacceptable and that the team’s management should be held accountable.  The show’s host finally asked him what he really wanted (key question), and the caller came back with “I want them in the playoffs!” (key answer).

This got me thinking about about my R-P-M (see later in this site for what that means), and specifically the Results component.  Now that caller was really results-oriented!  And there’s not a darn thing wrong with that.  Keeping your eye on results is a big part of what gets things done, keeps things moving.  But the trap is when you key in so much on a result that any deviation from that upsets your apple-cart so much that you just can’t function.  This ends up being counter-productive, meaning you are then in an even worse position from which to see the kind of results you are looking for.

The radio-show caller was so worked up about the teams’ season, that he’ll probably spend most of the off-season anguishing about his perception of the team’s lack of performance.  Many other fans would view the season as one with plenty of disappointments, but with unquestionable strides made in changing the team’s direction away from the legacy of sub-par play and performance.  Same result, different perspective.  Take care of the P and the M of your R-P-M, and the R will often be there for you, and may well just be inevitable!

Changing gears: we’ve had a great Christmas at our household, and hope you are enjoying your holiday season.  I hope you spend as much time with your family and loved ones as you can, and make sure to do your own “year in review”.  Try and focus on how you ha

I’m a note-taker.  Whether it be in client meetings, staff meetings, classes, or training calls lead by other leaders: I want a history of it.  It’s a great way to capture the knowledge accumulated by others, then you can access it later as the need arises.

This archive can meet the same need.  For me, it’s a journal of where I’ve been, and hence, where I’m going.  You can use it to grab what you’ve missed, or simply to get more of a flavor of where I’m coming from.

Happy hunting.
