April 12, 2008 Be True to Yourself A number of different sources have captured my attention in recent days. Whether they be stories from “back in the day”, online articles, blogs, or downloaded material, they all share the same theme, and that is to “be true to yourself”.
Think back to whenever you’ve had to use someone else’s words, but were expected to make it sound like they’re your own. That’s called being an actor, right? No problem if you are a trained actor. What if you’re not, though? Then it’s tough.
I can still remember my very first cold-call (before I was “enlightened”). I was calling to sell Life Insurance, using names from a phone book. I wrote out a script (Problem #1) using someone else’s approach (Problem #2), and I hadn’t “talked it out” beforehand (game, set, match!). First call, no answer (whew!) Second call, a kind lady answers, and I launch into a 90-second frenzied pitch, concluding with a question on how on track she is on reaching her goals and dreams. I hear a snicker, then a click. Served me right!
Be yourself. It’s one thing to step outside of and expand your comfort zone, as part of an effort to reach a goal that is part of your Life Gameplan (the Big Picture, which you have already developed and written out, right?). It’s quite another to be “acting”, when you should be REAL. If you can’t fully buy into a marketing method that you’ve been asked to use, talk to your leader. If you can’t use scripts to help you navigate situations you’ll encounter when working the phone without sounding stiff, boil it down into “talking points” that are your own. When your actions don’t match your internal compass, then you are in conflict, and you won’t succeed.
Be true to yourself. Keep it REAL! Good change (the kind that gets you closer to your Burning Desire) can hurt a little at first, but you’ll know if it’s right for you.
Onward, alan

I’m a note-taker. Whether it be in client meetings, staff meetings, classes, or training calls lead by other leaders: I want a history of it. It’s a great way to capture the knowledge accumulated by others, then you can access it later as the need arises.
This archive can meet the same need. For me, it’s a journal of where I’ve been, and hence, where I’m going. You can use it to grab what you’ve missed, or simply to get more of a flavor of where I’m coming from.
Happy hunting. |
