What can we learn from Vancouver?
I have really enjoyed watching the coverage of the Olympics this month from Vancouver, BC. The winter Olympiads have always been intriguing, perhaps since I’ve lived most of my life in the Houston area, where a light dusting of snow every few years is cause for widespread celebration.
As the games are winding down this weekend, I’m struck by these take-aways:
· Setbacks can often be a set-up for future triumph. The games started with human tragedy with the passing of the luger, and that theme continued with the unexpected death of the mother of the Canadian figure skater. But life does indeed go on, and the games went on. Joannie Rochette gave brave and strong performances to bring home a bronze medal to Canada, and to honor her late mother. This was a vivid reminder of how pressing forward can be its own reward. · Coaches can provide inspiration, but not motivation. The best coaches know how to instruct, provide guidance, impose structure as necessary, and dish out inspiration in the amounts needed by the athlete. But the athlete must be the one to search for their own motivation. The same holds true in business. We can look to others to provide a spark, but we are ourselves responsible for the motivation and of course then the action. · Live in the moment. I’ve heard it said that too many of us use the present to re-hash the past and think about the future, ignoring the here and now. Watching the athletes concentrating on their performances was a great reminder to live each moment, each day to its fullest.
These may seem like simple observations, but I think there are some powerful truths in there.
